LEAF SPRING

Initially referred to as laminated or carriage spring and occasionally known as a semi- elliptical spring or cart spring, a Leaf Spring is a simple form of spring, utilized for the suspension in automobiles. Its structure takes the form of a slender arc length of spring steel of rectangular cross- section. The center of the arc grants position for the axle, while tie holes are provided at either end for attaching to the automobile body. For extremely heavy vehicles, a Leaf Spring might be constructed from several leaves stacked on top of one another in many layers. A Leaf Spring can be fastened directly to the chassis at both ends or fastened directly at one end, with the other end fastened through a shackle, a short swinging arm. For heavy vehicles, Leaf Springs have the advantage of spreading the load throughout the vehicle's chassis. Leaf Springs also discover the rear axle, eliminating the requirement for trailing arms and a Panhard rod, to produce a less expensive and simple live axle rear suspension.

 

COIL SPRING

Coil Springs, occasionally called a helical spring, is a device, which is usually used to store energy and subsequently discharge it, to absorb shock, or to preserve a force between contacting surfaces. This is the most typical type of spring and may be a heavy- duty torsion bar coiled about a central vertical axis. Coil Springs compress and expand to absorb the movement from the wheels. They are manufactured of a material formed into the shape of a helix which returns to its natural length when unloaded.

 
TORSION BARS (TORSION RODS)

Torsion Bars(or Torsion Rods) utilize twisting elements of a steel bar to provide coil spring like function. One end of a bar is anchored to the vehicle frame and the other end is mounted on a wishbone, which works like a lever that moves perpendicular to the Torsion Bar. Torsion Bars are typically attached to the chassis and the suspension parts. Once the tire strikes a hump, vertical energy and movement is displaced to the wishbone and along the levering action, to the Torsion Bar. The Torsion Bar then twists along its axis to deliver the spring force.

 
AIR SPRINGS (AIR BAGS)

Air Springs, also referred to as Air Bags, consist of a cylindrical chamber of air situated in between the wheel and the car's body and utilize the compressive qualities of air to soften wheel vibrations. An Air Spring utilizes a flexible type membrane to confine compressed air, an Air Bag. The “spring” is essentially the air, and an Air Springs takes the natural elements from the air that allow it to be compressed. As the Air Bag is compressed, the air pressure inside the Air Bag increases, forcing the bag to seek a return to its static stature, comparable to a steel spring.
