Replaced Components
The 1986-1990 Buick Electra is built with the following rear suspension components:

1986-1990 Buick Electra Air Struts (x2) - struts that contain an air bladder whose dampening capabilities is controlled by the suspension control module; they serve two purposes. These connect the wheel of a vehicle to the driving surface in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle. They also help maintain the vehicles correct ride height, especially whenever the amount of load put onto the vehicle changes.

1986-1990 Buick Electra Coil Springs (x2) - what we love! Coil springs hold the vehicle up but be careful, they are rated for and designed to work with the rest of the suspension system, so when you change air shocks to passive shocks, then you will need a different rated coil spring that works well with the new type of shocks.

1986-1990 Buick Electra Height Sensors (x2) - a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out.

1986-1990 Buick Electra Air Lines - tubes that run from a compressor to the air which carry pressurized air to the air struts in order to adjust the height of the vehicle, respectively.

1986-1990 Buick Electra Compressor Assembly - creates/sends pressurized to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive.

1986-1990 Buick Electra Dryer - prevents moisture build-up inside of air suspension parts.

1986-1990 Buick Electra Suspension Control Module - a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height.

1986-1990 Buick Electra O-rings - Although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.

Suspension Failure Signs

If the 1986-1990 Buick Electra is unable to maintain the proper ride height, it may have a failed or leaking air suspension system. Look for these classic signs in the Electra that indicate the suspension system is going bad, before it's too late and total failure sets in. A sudden height variance between different sides of the Electra is a major red flag. Typically, the rear end will sag and the front end will remain inflated. This gives the illusion the Electra is “squatting down” in the rear. Some drivers notice a leaning appearance, shifting from one side to the other. Other common signs include an illuminated suspension warning light on the instrument cluster, and an improperly working air compressor. If the air compressor stops working or runs too often, suspension failure will advance. The Electra owner should have any suspension issue fixed as soon as it presents itself.

The various components that make up the air suspension system on the 1986-1990 Buick Electra must always work in unison. When one part falls out of sync, the rest follow suit. This reliance is expensive and inefficient. Strutmasters' air to non-air suspension conversion kit permanently eliminates this dependence. The kit, manufactured in America, comes complete with two custom-rated coil springs and two hydraulic fluid gas-charged struts for the rear of the Electra. Customers appreciate that the kit is installed in about one hour per wheel. Forget the hassles of faulty onboard compressors and level sensors forever! This is a direct replacement- no modifications are needed before the coilover suspension kit is installed. The quality parts are backed by Strutmasters' 1-year warranty. Detailed instructions, online installation videos, and technical support from Strutmasters' ASE certified experts help guide a smooth repair. Plus, the low price of the kit is a fraction of the costs of dealership direct replacement and individual aftermarket part replacement.
