Additional Suspension Information
What kind of suspension does my 1986-1993 Buick Riviera have? The 1986-1993 Buick Riviera is built with the following rear suspension components:
1986-1993 Buick Riviera Air Struts (x2) - struts that contain an air bladder whose dampening capabilities is controlled by the suspension control module. These connect the wheel of a vehicle to the driving surface in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle.
1986-1993 Buick Riviera Leaf Springs (x2) - leaf springs hold the vehicle up but be careful, yours are rated for and are designed to work with the rest of the suspension system. For example, your leaf springs are designed to hold the vehicle up in conjunction with the air struts, so when the air struts fail, the springs may not be strong enough to hold the vehicle off the ground by themselves.
1986-1993 Buick Riviera Height Sensors (x2) - a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out.
1986-1993 Buick Riviera Air Lines- tubes that run from a compressor to the air which carry pressurized air to the air struts in order to adjust the height of the vehicle, respectively.
1986-1993 Buick Riviera Compressor Assembly- creates/sends pressurized to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive.
1986-1993 Buick Riviera Dryer- prevents moisture build-up inside of air suspension parts.
1986-1993 Buick Riviera Suspension Control Module- a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicle’s correct ride height.
1986-1993 Buick Riviera O-rings- Although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.
How Do I Know If My Air Suspension Is Failing? The most common symptom of a leaking or failed air suspension is a sudden noticeable uneven height difference between different sides of the vehicle. This vehicle will usually have a sagging rear-end. Other symptoms could include a suspension warning message or light in the instrument cluster, or the air compressor no longer working or running way too often (which would be very noisy and noticeable). The last major tip is your vehicle is no longer able to reach or maintain the proper ride height.
Why choose the Conversion Kit over replacing the air suspension system on your 1986-1993 Buick Riviera? We have already seen the assortment of parts that construct the air suspension system. Our conversion kit gets rid of having to depend on all of those parts functioning correctly and in sync. This conversion kit consists of (2) passive air struts for the rear. These struts are manually inflated with our custom designed Schroeder valves, so YOU control the type of ride you want. Inflate/deflate these with an air compressor, just like a bicycle tire. No more dealing with the hassles of faulty onboard compressors or level sensors not functioning properly. It normally only takes about an hour per wheel for installation, and is designed for DIYers! The conversion not only saves you time and frustration, it saves you lots of money. Now we are going to compare three prices: the price for repairing your air suspension system at the dealer, the price for installing competitor aftermarket air suspension parts on your vehicle, and the price for a brand new passive air system for the rear of your vehicle:
