How Do I know If My GX 470 Air Suspension is failing?
A sudden loss of three to five inches of ride height in the front of the vehicle is the most obvious sign the air suspension is failing on your 2003-2009 Lexus GX 470. This will be accompanied by a rough or bouncy ride quality. Tiny cracks in the rubber air springs (from years of up and down motion and exposure to the elements,) cause air leaks in the system. The leaky air springs cause the onboard air compressor to work much longer than it was designed for and it eventually quits or can no longer pump enough air to support the weight of the vehicle. When this occurs, a suspension warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster. 2003-2009 Lexus GX 470 Electronic Shock Absorbers (x2)- a metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle.
2003-2009 Lexus GX 470 Rubber Air Springs (x2)- Rubber Air Springs (also known as air bags) are filled with air by an onboard compressor and hold the vehicle up. They are designed to work with the factory equipped electronic shocks.
2003-2009 Lexus GX 470 Height Sensors (x2)- a linkage located near each wheel that constantly measures the height of the vehicle. The information is reported to a suspension control module that recommends any changes in ride height (by adding or reducing air pressure in the air springs). The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out.
2003-2009 Lexus GX 470 Suspension Control Module- This vehicle is equipped with a suspension control module, which is the brain of the suspension system. It reads all of the signals that are being sent by the height sensors and determines if the vehicle needs to be raised or lowered.
2003-2009 Lexus GX 470 Rubber O-rings- Although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.

The product was everything I expected. Jason was very detailed in the order process. The kit comes with directions that are very through. I would say I am a novice when it comes to working on cars, and was able to complete this under 4 hours. A helpful hint, some parts stores such as Auto Zone lends out external spring compressors at no charge, just a deposit, so if you don’t have a set that is a good route as you will need them to get the job done (as the directions indicate). Thanks Jason and Strutmasters for this great alternative option for fixing my suspension challenges.
Took about 4 hrs to install, not too hard. Made a huge improvement in the ride of our GX470.
The passenger side air bag failed on our GX 470. The driver’s side airbag had cracks in it and the condition of the air compressor was unknown. After much research, decided to purchase the Strutmasters conversion kit. The quality of the components is excellent. I do have some install suggestions that would help:
1. After raising and supporting the vehicle, remove the spare tire which will allow more room to remove the old air bags and for installing the new coil springs.
2. When installing the lower coil spring plate/puck assembly, I super glued the flat washer and lock washer together, then super glued those two washers to the underside of the rear axle perch. This made it much easier to install the bolt and nut since the space below the spring perch is confined.
3. Kick panel removal – first remove the “dead pedal” next to the kick panel. It pops off with a flat blade screwdriver. Then remove the retaining nut holding the kick panel in place.
After the kit was installed, the ride is very good. The vehicle is slightly taller in the back. There have been no issues with any of the springs or shocks and no strange noises. Overall I would recommend the kit to anyone. It took me most of a day to install, taking my time. The worst part was cutting off the top nut on the old shocks.

I want to start by saying thank you to Jennifer and everyone at Strutmasters. Not only did Jennifer speak to me on the phone in a nice and courteous manner (instead of a remote call center), she made sure to send out the right parts very quickly. Shortly after receiving the parts, I received a HAND WRITTEN thank you letter. Who does that in 2017?!
Anyway, I want to get on with my review. My family and I took a road trip to Key West a few weeks ago. We were expecting to spend about 6 hours in a loaded down SUV, but we were excited because the ride to the Keys is a fun one with lots to see. About an hour into the trip, our air suspension collapsed and would not rise. We spent another 8 or so hours bouncing around and just being miserable. Because I could not safely drive the speed limit, my air suspension ensured that everyone behind us was just as miserable as we were. Did I mention that the road to the Keys in only two lanes? Well, when we finally reached our destination, I looked for a mechanic that could help. Few mechanics had any idea what was happening to our car, and the ones that did know wanted a king’s ransom to fix it. Obviously, the trip home was a lot of fun. We all needed a chiropractor and a masseuse.
After arriving home, I did a lot of research into why my suspension collapsed. I also learned that the price to fix the issues far exceeded what my budget could handle. In came Strutmasters. For a few hundred dollars, I received the parts needed to fix my car. I called a local mechanic who specializes in tires and suspensions, and they installed the kit. Now my car drives smoother than I remember it ever driving. I think this is the best investment I could make on that car. The best part? Never having to worry about those ridiculous air springs ever again!

I contacted Strutmasters for a quote on a replacement for my rear shock/air system on my Lexus GX470. I was surprised that the first person I spoke with knew exactly what I was calling about and was able to explain everything to me as I did not even really understand what system my car has and how it works. Donielle provided me with a list of potential installers within minutes and got me a quote within hours. I was not completely aware of how the ordering would work. Most shops I called weren’t familiar with my car’s problem so they hadn’t heard of a replacement. A few I called would not let me order or bring in my own parts. I called one of the places on the list that Donielle provided and they were very knowledgeable. However, they called Strutmasters and received a quote themselves, not sure why since I gave them the quote. I regret that I could not help Donielle, thanking her for her excellent and prompt customer service. I am looking forward to the shock system being replaced.
Over all the kit was very well designed and relatively easy to install. The major problem I had was with the nuts used to attach the puck and plate (parts used to hold the coil in place). The directions show a nut with a lip that will sit on to of a wrench, instead I received standard nuts with lock washers. These were very difficult to use. A self locking nut with a lip would have made the install considerably easier.
Over all it took me about eight hours. I am fairly inexperienced at auto maintenance but generally mechanically inclined. I learned two lessons that would have rapidly sped up the install. First, the upper nut of the shocks which were unworkable with a wrench (no opposing nut on the stock shocks) cut off quite easily with a sawzall with a heavy metal blade, although on the passenger side there is a fuel line (or something similar) close by so I had to be cautious. Second, not all coil compressors are equal. The first one I bought turned out to stick out several inches from the coil, and was too bulky to fit the coil and compressor into the space in the vehicle. The second set of compressors that I bought were considerably more compact and easy to use. If Strutmasters sells an appropriate compressor it would be nice if it were pushed strongly on their website.
The instructions could be improved by the inclusion of pictures that show a much larger area of the under side of the vehicle, with inserts that show the current pictures as magnified regions of the larger scale photo. I found that the compressors worked best when attached with two rings of metal between where I attached them and the end.
Customer service was awesome, and with a few simple improvements this could be and exceptional product.

Once installed the ride seemed to mimic the OEM ride, the ride height appears to be right on, saved $1000 dollars to a total reinstall of the OEM Air ride parts (one shock alone is $600), I called in and the support was good. as a canadian i am not a fan of ups. they are expensive and charge a brokerage fee which a shipper like usps does not. they also just put it in canada post(our answer to usps) after it arrived in canada so there isnt a speed of delivery gain. i hope you will, in the future consider allowing choice of shipping options to canada.

(Product Code: -GX470-R1-S) I received this rear suspension conversion kit and the instructions that came with it had a PDF text box on every page of the installation instructions which had blocked out the text for the install steps that was printed at the top of the page. I called and asked for an electronic copy by email, which I then had to copy and paste the instructions into a MS word document to view/read all the installation instructions. Installation was fairly easy with the proper tools and help (2 hours). We found that releasing the rear sway bar brackets made it easier to install the coils. Very happy with the ride and cost savings.
I purchased this kit to switch the air suspension to coil spring. It fits perfect with no modification needed. The install sheets had a box that blocks the top portion of the instruction. Plus the instruction is a copy and its so dark that it’s pretty useless. The instruction was too vague on how to disconnect the air lines. There are additional small clips you have to push outward away from the air lines before you can pull the air lines out. Thnx to my mechanically incline self, I was able to figure out out myself. The only thing missing is instruction on how to deactivate the air pump and to deactivate the now flashing dash light. I’ll give 5 stars for good product, 1 star for instructions, avg 3 stars.
Just had my air shocks replaced with strutmasters spring and shock kit. The springs are not seated yet because it has been only a week but I am very happy with saving $1200.00!!!!!! Ride is slightly more harder than air shocks but I would purchase these again. Overall I am very happy with the purchase! Thanks for the option!! Lonnie
At 120,000 miles, the conversion to Strutmasters coils from the Lexus air strut system was a no-brainer. The ride is virtually identical. The cost was ~1/3 the price of replacement OEM air struts. For the 8 years we’ve owned our 2005 GX470, we’ve never used the shock switch (comfort/sport) so losing the ability to adjust back & forth was not a concern.
