Replaced Components
The 2004-2006 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) is built with the following suspension components: 2004-2006 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Electronic Shocks (x2)- shocks abosrbers whose dampening capabilities is controlled by the suspension control module in order to ensure proper wheel-to-ground contact. 2004-2006 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Air Springs (x4)- (models with air suspension only) commonly referred to as air bags, a plastic and rubber bag that is fitted on top of the strut that uses pressurized air as a cushion instead of a metal coil spring to hold a vehicle off of the ground and off of its wheels. These are the number one cause of all air suspension leaks. All air springs all go bad at about the same rate. If one is leaking, the others will not be far behind. For a proper repair, all of them need to be replaced at the same time.. 2004-2006 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Struts (x2)- a type of shock absorber; has metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle.; the air spring assembled on top of the strut is commonly referred to as an air strut. 2004-2006 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Height Sensors (x4)- a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out. 2004-2006 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Air Lines- tubes that run from a compressor to the air struts which carry pressurized air to the air bags. 2004-2006 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Solenoids (x4)- usually L-shaped, these plastic components connect the electrical connection and lines of suspension components to the suspension control module on vehicles with active suspension. The solenoid regulates the air pressure for each air spring. Solenoids start to leak as they wear out causing the vehicle to sag or to lean. This will cause the ride height sensor to send a signal to activate the compressor in an attempt to inflate the air suspension and level out the vehicle. This excessive work load will eventually lead to total failure of the compressor. 2004-2006 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Compressor Assembly- creates/sends pressurized air to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive. 2004-2006 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) Suspension Control Module- a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height. 2004-2006 Mercedes Benz E500 (RWD Wagon) O-rings- although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.

Suspension Failure Signs
Look for these commonly seen signs of a failed or leaking air suspension system when attempting to diagnose your 2004-2006 Mercedes-Benz E500. You will want to know what you’re looking for so you can tell if your air suspension is either going bad or has already reached total failure. The most noticeable is a suddenly uneven height difference between different areas of the E500. Usually one end, either the front or rear, is sagging while the opposite end is inflated. This gives the illusion that the E500 is squatting down too low to the ground. There might be a slight lean from one side to the other. If you notice any changes in the E500 ride height, like it is not reaching or maintaining the appropriate height consistently, then you need to get a repair or replacement. Furthermore, an illuminated suspension warning light or message on the instrument cluster is a red flag. If the air compressor has stopped working, a bad suspension may have caused it to wear out. If it is very loud and noisy, it is running too often. Get a repair as soon as you can.

OEM Replacement Cost
'+ Front Air Strut Assemblies ($1,240/strut) ) + Rear Electronic Shocks ($180/shock) + Rear Air Spring ($380/spring) + Air Compressor Assembly ($740) = Over $4,300 (and that doesnt even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).

Aftermarket Replacement Cost
SOME PARTS UNAVAILABLE!
The air suspension system on the Mercedes-Benz E500 contains a variety of assorted parts. If one part breaks or fails, the entire system is defunct. We came up with an air to non-air conversion kit that eliminates this dependence on every single (expensive) part to function properly and in sync. This kit, for your E500, includes two new pre-assembled front coil-over struts, new premium steel coil springs for the rear, and two passive hydraulic fluid and gas shocks for the rear end. The parts are high quality- we offer the only kit that uses premium cold wound coil springs- and are backed by our 1-year warranty. DIYers applaud our kit because it is installed in about one hour per wheel, with the help of easy to read instructions complete with pictures. The kit saves you time, frustration (no more trips to the dealership service center), and a ton of money. In fact, the cost difference between choosing an air vs non-air suspension system is huge. It's the main reason our customers decided to make the switch. On this page, we compare three costs: that of repairing your air suspension system at the Mercedes-Benz dealer, that of installing aftermarket air suspension parts on your E500 piece-by-piece, and that of getting rid of the air ride headache for good and installing a Strutmasters coil-over suspension conversion kit today.
