Replaced Components
The 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 is built with the following rear suspension components: 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 Electronic Shocks (x2)- shocks whose dampening capabilities are controlled by the suspension control module. 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 Air Springs (x2)- commonly referred to as air bags, a plastic and rubber bag that is fitted on top of the strut that uses pressurized air as a cushion instead of a metal coil spring to hold a vehicle off of the ground and off of its wheels. These are the number one cause of all air suspension leaks. All air springs all go bad at about the same rate. If one is leaking, the others will not be far behind. For a proper repair, all of them need to be replaced at the same time. 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 Height Sensors (x2)- a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out. 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 Air Lines- tubes that run from a compressor to the air springs, which carry pressurized air to the air bags. 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 Solenoids (x2)- usually L-shaped, these plastic components connect the electrical connection and lines of suspension components to the suspension control module on vehicles with active suspension. The solenoid regulates the air pressure for each air spring. Solenoids start to leak as they wear out causing the vehicle to sag or to lean. This will cause the ride height sensor to send a signal to activate the compressor in an attempt to inflate the air suspension and level out the vehicle. This excessive work load will eventually lead to total failure of the compressor. 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 Compressor Assembly- creates/sends pressurized air to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive. 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 Suspension Control Module- a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height. 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 O-rings- although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.

Suspension Failure Signs
If the 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 is unable to reach and maintain its proper ride height, a failed or leaking air suspension system may be at fault. Look for the following signs to diagnose a bad suspension before it's too late and total failure sets in. Height variances between different sides of the vehicle are red flags. One end may sag while the other end remains inflated. There may be a shifting lean from one side to the other. Perhaps there's an overall squatting down appearance. These imbalances, if not fixed promptly, will wear out the air compressor. In turn, a suspension warning light will illuminate on the dashboard. At this point, suspension failure is advanced and an expensive repair is in order.

OEM Replacement Cost
'+ Front Struts ($496/strut) + Front Air Spring ($350/spring) + Front Mounts ($43/mount) + Rear Electronic Shocks ($740/shock) + Rear Air/Hydraulic Spring ($430/spring) + Air Compressor Assembly ($540) = TOTAL: Over $4,500 (and that doesnt even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).

Aftermarket Replacement Cost
'+ Front Air Struts ($675/strut) + Rear Electronic Shocks ($110/shock) + Rear Air/Hydraulic Spring ($190/spring) + Air Compressor Assembly ($680) = TOTAL: Over $2,600 (and that doesn't even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).
When one component of the 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 air suspension system stops working, the entire system is defunct. Strutmasters' air to non-air suspension conversion kit eliminates this dependency for good. The kit, made in America, comes complete with two rear Premium Coil Springs, one suspension warning light-removal module, two front struts fully assembled with Premium Coil Springs, new mounts, and all necessary hardware. Customers appreciate that the kit is installed in as little as one hour per wheel. Detailed instructions and online installation videos help ensure a smooth repair process. For further technical support, ASE certified experts are available over the telephone. Lastly, the cost of the kit is a fraction of the prices of dealership direct replacement and individual aftermarket part replacement. It's no wonder that the majority of 2008 Mercedes-Benz R550 owners make the switch from air to non-air suspension using our coil over conversion kit.
