Replaced Components

The 1999-2003 Ford Windstar is built with the following suspension components:

1999-2003 Ford Windstar Air Struts (x2)- struts that contain an air bladder whose dampening capabilities is controlled by the suspension control module; these have two functions. They connect the wheel of a vehicle to the driving surface in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle. They also help maintain the vehicles correct ride height, especially whenever the amount of load put onto the vehicle changes.

1999-2003 Ford Windstar Air Springs (x2)- commonly referred to as air bags, a plastic and rubber bag that is fitted on top of the strut that uses pressurized air as a cushion instead of a metal coil spring to hold a vehicle off of the ground and off of its wheels. These are the number one cause of all air suspension leaks. All air springs all go bad at about the same rate. If one is leaking, the others will not be far behind. For a proper repair, all of them need to be replaced at the same time.

1999-2003 Ford Windstar Shock Absorbers (x2)- a metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle.

1999-2003 Ford Windstar Compressor- This vehicle is equipped with one air suspension compressor. The compressor is responsible for pumping up the air springs and shocks. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor is forced to run continuously to try and keep the air springs inflated. After a couple of days of running non-stop, the compressor will burn itself out. Replacing the compressor is a timely and expensive project to undertake.

1999-2003 Ford Windstar Dryer Assembly- This vehicle is equipped with a dryer assembly. The dryer assembly is responsible for getting moisture out of the air lines. Once the air suspension parts start to leak, moisture will build up throughout the air system. Moisture damages the air suspension components from the inside out. The dryer must be replaced whenever the compressor is replaced to prevent further damage.

1999-2003 Ford Windstar Suspension Control Module- This vehicle is equipped with a suspension control module. This module is the brain of the suspension system and it reads all of the signals that are being sent by the height sensors and determines if the vehicle needs to be raised or lowered.

1999-2003 Ford Windstar O-rings- Although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.

Suspension Failure Signs

Early diagnosis of a failed or leaking air suspension system in the 1999-2003 Ford Windstar is critical to maintaining the vehicle's overall health. Look for these common signs that the air suspension system is going bad, before it's too late and total failure sets in. An inability of the Windstar to maintain the proper ride height is one major red flag. The next is any sudden height variance between different sides of the vehicle. Typically with the Windstar, the rear end will sag while the front remains inflated. This gives the illusion the Windstar is squatting down in the rear. If this imbalance is not fixed promptly, the air compressor will eventually wear out. One sign that this is happening is if the air compressor is running too long (longer than 15-20 seconds at a time). If there are visible cracks in the rear air springs (caused by dry rot), they should be replaced immediately. Once suspension failure advances further, a suspension warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster.

OEM Replacement Cost

+ Air Springs ($400/spring)
+ Compressor and Dryer Assembly ($210)
+ Air Struts ($223/strut)
= TOTAL: Over $1,470 (and that doesn't even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).

The original air suspension system on the 1999-2003 Ford Windstar is comprised of various parts that must always work together. Strutmasters' air to non-air suspension conversion kit gets rid of this faulty and expensive dependency forever. The kit, made in the USA, comes complete with two rear shocks and two front shocks. Car enthusiasts appreciate that the kit is installed in as little as one hour per wheel. Detailed instructions and online installation videos help guide a smooth repair. If further assistance is needed, ASE certified experts offer technical support over the phone. The quality shocks are guaranteed by Strutmasters' 1-year warranty. Aside from top-notch customer service and excellent quality, the low price is what seals the deal for most Ford Windstar owners. This kit costs a fraction of the prices of dealer direct replacement and individual part replacement.
