Replaced Components
The 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 is built with the following suspension components: 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 Air Springs (x4)- (models with air suspension only). Commonly referred to as air bags, a plastic and rubber bag that is fitted on top of the strut that uses pressurized air as a cushion instead of a metal coil spring to hold a vehicle off of the ground and off of its wheels. These are the number one cause of all air suspension leaks. All air springs all go bad at about the same rate. If one is leaking, the others will not be far behind. For a proper repair, all of them need to be replaced at the same time. 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 Struts (x2)- a type of shock absorber; has metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle.; the air spring assembled on top of the strut is commonly referred to as an air strut. 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 Air Shocks (x2)– (models w/ AIRMATIC Dual-Control only). The air shocks are pumped up automatically to assist with the ride quality. These shocks contain a rubber bladder which is notorious for dry rotting, causing leaks in the shocks which inevitably leads to multiple failures in the air system. 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 Passive Hydraulic Shock Absorbers (x2)- (models w/o AIRMATIC Dual-Control only). A metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle. 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 Coil Springs (x4)- (models w/o AIRMATIC). What we love! Coil springs hold the vehicle up but be careful, they are rated for and designed to work with the rest of the suspension system, so when you change air shocks to passive shocks, then you will need a different rated coil spring that works well with the new type of shocks. 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 Height Sensors (x4)- a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out. 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 Air Lines- (models with air suspension only). Tubes that run from a compressor to the air struts which carry pressurized air to the air bags. 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 Compressor Assembly- (models with air suspension only). Creates/sends pressurized air to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive. 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 Suspension Control Module- a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height. 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 O-rings- although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.
Suspension Failure Signs
Your 2005-2011 Mercedes Benz CLS500 may have a failed or leaking air suspension system if you notice any of the following symptoms. It is important to know the signs of a suspension system going bad so you can properly diagnose the situation before total failure sets in. The most commonly seen sign is a sudden noticeable uneven height difference between different sides of the CLS500. Often this manifests as a sagging rear or front end, while the opposite end remains inflated. This gives the illusion that the CLS500 is squatting down too low to the ground. Some drivers notice a lean from one side to the other. Overall, your CLS500 should be reaching and maintaining its proper ride height at all times. Other signs to look for- check for an illuminated warning light or message on the instrument panel. And listen to the air compressor. If it has stopped working or is running too often (will be loud and noisy), a bad suspension may have caused it to wear out.
OEM Replacement Cost
'+ Front Air Struts ($1,240/strut) ) + Rear Electronic Air Shocks ($580/shock) + Rear Air Spring ($1,190/spring) + Air Compressor Assembly ($380) = Over $6,400 (and that doesn't include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).
Aftermarket Replacement Cost
'+ Front Air Struts ($840/strut) ) + Rear Electronic Air Shocks ($480/shock) + Rear Air Spring ($310/spring) + Air Compressor Assembly ($390) = Over $3,600 (and that doesn't include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).
There is a wide variety of expensive and complicated parts and components that make up the faulty air suspension system on the 2005-2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS500. Instead of spending a fortune chasing several repairs with replacement parts, Strutmasters has a better idea. We created our suspension conversion kit to eliminate the dependency on all these assorted parts working properly and in sync. This kit includes one custom-designed suspension light-fix module, two new fully assembled front struts; and a pair of Premium Steel Coil Springs and two passive hydraulic fluid and gas shocks for the rear end of the CLS500. DIYers love our kit because it is installed in about one hour per wheel. It also comes with easy to read installation instructions, complete with pictures and helpful support information. The conversion kit saves time, frustration, and a ton of money. Looking at the price difference between choosing an air vs non-air suspension system will shed some light on why customers choose conversion over direct replacement at the dealer. On this page, we compare three costs: that of repairing your air suspension system at the Mercedes-Benz dealer, that of installing aftermarket air suspension parts on your CLS500 individually, and that of getting rid of the faulty air ride headache for good and installing a brand new coil-over suspension conversion kit today.
