Replaced Components

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG is built with the following suspension components:

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG Air Springs (x4)- (models with air suspension only). Commonly referred to as air bags, a plastic and rubber bag that is fitted on top of the strut that uses pressurized air as a cushion instead of a metal coil spring to hold a vehicle off of the ground and off of its wheels. These are the number one cause of all air suspension leaks. All air springs all go bad at about the same rate. If one is leaking, the others will not be far behind. For a proper repair, all of them need to be replaced at the same time.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG Struts (x2)- a type of shock absorber; has metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle.; the air spring assembled on top of the strut is commonly referred to as an air strut.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG Air Shocks (x2)– (models w/ AIRMATIC Dual-Control only). The air shocks are pumped up automatically to assist with the ride quality. These shocks contain a rubber bladder which is notorious for dry rotting, causing leaks in the shocks which inevitably leads to multiple failures in the air system.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG Passive Hydraulic Shock Absorbers (x2)- (models w/o AIRMATIC Dual-Control only). A metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG Coil Springs (x4)- (models w/o AIRMATIC). What we love! Coil springs hold the vehicle up but be careful, they are rated for and designed to work with the rest of the suspension system, so when you change air shocks to passive shocks, then you will need a different rated coil spring that works well with the new type of shocks.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG Height Sensors (x4)- a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG Air Lines- (models with air suspension only). Tubes that run from a compressor to the air struts which carry pressurized air to the air bags.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG Compressor Assembly- (models with air suspension only). Creates/sends pressurized air to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG Suspension Control Module- a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height.

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG O-rings- although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.

Suspension Failure Signs
You love your CLS55 too much to let a failing suspension system continue running untreated. You may walk into your garage one morning only to find the car looks like it’s been slammed down to the ground! Don’t let total failure set in. Look for these common signs of a failed or leaking air suspension system before it’s too late. The most noticeable is a sudden uneven height difference between different sides of the 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG. Usually, there is a sagging rear or front end while the opposite end remains inflated. This makes the CLS55 look like it’s “squatting” down too low to the ground. Often the car may look like it leans from one side to the other. If you think something is wrong with the ride height, then the suspension system likely requires repair. If there is an illuminated suspension warning light or message on the instrument console then you are one step closer to needing a suspension replacement. Lastly, listen to the air compressor. A bad suspension can cause this component to wear out. If it has stopped working or is very loud and noisy (running too often), then you know something needs to be fixed ASAP.

OEM Replacement Cost

+ Front Air Struts ($1,240/strut) )
+ Rear Electronic Air Shocks ($580/shock)
+ Rear Air Spring ($1,190/spring)
+ Air Compressor Assembly ($380)
= Over $6,400 (and that doesnt even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).

Aftermarket Replacement Cost

+ Front Air Struts ($840/strut) )
+ Rear Electronic Air Shocks ($480/shock)
+ Rear Air Spring ($310/spring)
+ Air Compressor Assembly ($390)
= Over $3,600 (and that doesn't even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).

We are The Suspension Experts. We know that the wide variety of assorted parts that make up the faulty air suspension system on your Mercedes Benz CLS55 tend to break. We know our customers used to spend a fortune on bringing the CLS55 to the dealership every time it needed a suspension repair. We knew there had to be a better way, so we created our conversion kits. They eliminate the dependency on expensive air suspension parts working perfectly in sync. This kit includes two new pre-assembled front coil-over struts using high-quality coil springs, two new coil springs with mounts, and two passive hydraulic fluid and gas shocks for the rear end of the CLS55. DIYers love it because it is installed in about one hour per wheel, and comes with helpful pictorial installation instructions. The kit saves you time, frustration, and a ton of money. The cost difference between choosing an air vs non-air suspension system is notable. On this page, we compare three prices: that of repairing your faulty air suspension system at the Mercedes-Benz dealer, that of installing aftermarket air suspension parts on your CLS55 individually, and that of getting rid of the faulty air ride headache and installing a brand new coil-over suspension conversion kit today. Your wallet will thank you for choosing that last option!
