Replaced Components
The 1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight is built with the following rear suspension components:

1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Air Struts (x2) - struts that contain an air bladder whose dampening capabilities is controlled by the suspension control module; they serve two purposes. These connect the wheel of a vehicle to the driving surface in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle. They also help maintain the vehicles correct ride height, especially whenever the amount of load put onto the vehicle changes.

1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Coil Springs (x2) - what we love! Coil springs hold the vehicle up but be careful, they are rated for and designed to work with the rest of the suspension system, so when you change air shocks to passive shocks, then you will need a different rated coil spring that works well with the new type of shocks.

1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Height Sensors (x2) - a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out.

1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Air Lines - tubes that run from a compressor to the air which carry pressurized air to the air struts in order to adjust the height of the vehicle, respectively.

1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Compressor Assembly - creates/sends pressurized to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive.

1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Dryer - prevents moisture build-up inside of air suspension parts.

1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Suspension Control Module - a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height.

1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight O-rings - Although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.

Suspension Failure Signs

The inability of the 1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight to reach and maintain the proper ride height is a classic symptom of a failed or leaking air suspension system. Look for these indicators before it's too late and total failure sets in. The suspension may be going bad if the owner notices a sudden height variance between different sides of the Ninety-Eight. Typically the rear end will sag while the front end remains inflated. There may be a shifting lean from one side to the other. These height imbalances, if not fixed promptly, wear out the air compressor. If the air compressor runs too often and stops working then suspension failure advances. An illuminated suspension warning light on the instrument cluster will confirm this diagnosis.

The assorted components that comprise the air suspension system on the 1985-1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight must always function in sync. When one part stops working, the system is defunct. Strutmasters' air to non-air suspension conversion kit is an affordable direct replacement solution that permanently eliminates this reliance. The kit, made in the USA, comes with two custom-rated coil springs and two hydraulic fluid gas-charged struts for the rear. The kit is installed in as little as one hour per wheel. Say goodbye to faulty onboard compressors and level sensors for good! Detailed instructions, online installation videos, and technical support from ASE certified experts help guide a smooth repair. Strutmasters' 1-year warranty provides customers with peace of mind. But, perhaps most appealing, is the low price. Without sacrificing quality, the kit costs a fraction of direct replacement at the dealership and individual aftermarket part replacement. This coilover suspension conversion kit saves Ninety-Eight owners time, frustration, and money when the air suspension system goes bad.
