The2000-2006 GMC Yukon XL 1500 is built with the following suspension components: 2000-2006 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Air/Magnetic Shocks (x2)- The GMC Yukon features two electronically-controlled shocks which use air bladders or magnets to smooth out the ride as it travels over rough road surfaces. 2000-2006 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Coil Springs (x2)- These coil springs work in the same way as coil springs which are found on cars with a passive suspension. However, since they are built for your Yukon's active suspension, they won't work properly if you decide to convert to a passive suspension. 2000-2006 Yukon XL 1500 Torsion Bar- This horizontal bar can be found at the front of the vehicle. It holds the front of the Yukon in place up off of its wheels and the ground. 2000-2006 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Shock Absorbers (x2)- The shock absorbers on your GMC are metal tubes which have been filled with a gas-charged hydraulic fluid. This allows them to absorb the bumps and bounces in the road. This means that they are responsible for the comfort of the ride. 2000-2006 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Air Lines- These plastic hoses carry the pressurized air that comes out of the compressor and delivers it into the air springs, allowing them to inflate to the proper height. 2000-2006 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Solenoids (x4)- The solenoids on your Yukon regulate the air pressure in each air spring. They are the connection point between the electrical and mechanical components and the suspension control module. As they start to age they will begin to leak, putting extra stress on the other components, namely the compressor. 2000-2006 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Compressor- The air used to inflate the air springs in your Yukon is generated by the compressor. This component also pumps the air through the air lines and into the air bags. It is usually the most expensive and difficult component in an air suspension to service or replace. 2000-2006 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Assembly- Either from freezing or causing cracks, moisture causes a great deal of damage to an air suspension system from the inside out. Therefore, the Yukon features a dryer which constantly removes moisture from the system. It is advisable to replace this component whenever the compressor is replaced to ensure the system continues to function properly. 2000-2006 Yukon XL 1500 Suspension Control Module- This small computer uses signals sent from the height sensors to determine how much each air spring needs to be raised or lowered. It controls the compressor and instructs it on how much air to generate and where to send it. It is an expensive component to replace and usually is not repairable. 2000-2006 Yukon XL 1500 O-rings- These rubber washers keep the air lines sealed at their connection points. This keeps the system running efficiently and free of debris. They should be replaced whenever the system is serviced
Suspension Failure Signs
Have you noticed recently that your compressor, located at the rear of the vehicle, is running for 30 seconds when you first turn on your Yukon and that it is even turning on while you're driving? Does it seem like your 2000-2006 GMC Yukon XL 1500 isn't sitting quite level or maybe it's sagging a bit in the back? If so, then it's likely you have a leak in your air suspension. Tiny cracks form in the rubber bladder portion of the rear air shocks and those air leaks eventually kill the onboard compressor. These vehicles also have a pair of electronic shocks in the front that are slightly more difficult to spot when defective. If you start to notice that your ride isn't as smooth as it once was, it is important to look for some warning signs of a failed suspension. Especially with a large vehicle like the Yukon XL 1500, it is important to detect problems early to avoid serious safety hazards and expense. The first and most obvious sign is an uneven height between two sides of the vehicle. Since the front end of the Yukon XL 1500 is held up by a torsion bar, this is usually seen in the form of a sagging rear end of the vehicle. This may also be a differential between the passenger and driver sides. This is an indication that there is a leak somewhere in the system and the compressor is trying to compensate. There is also a suspension warning light on the dash of the Yukon which will illuminate when the problem gets bad enough. It is important to identify and fix suspension issues before they cause damages to other parts of your car or present serious safety issues.
