  • For best results getting the suspension warning light turned off, we recommend installing a four-wheel conversion kit for 2002 to 2006 models, item GC14F and a four-wheel conversion kit with module for 2007 to 2013 models, item GC34FM.

Replaced Components

The 2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 is built with the following suspension components:

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Air/Electronic/Magnetic Shocks (x2)- shocks that contain an air bladder or magnets whose dampening capabilities is controlled by the suspension control module.

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Coil Springs (x2/x4)- what we love! Coil springs hold the vehicle up but be careful, they are rated for and designed to work with the rest of the suspension system, so when you change air shocks to passive shocks, then you will need a different rated coil spring that works well with the new type of shocks other

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Torsion Bar- on some 4x4 models. Adjustable horizontal bar on the front of the vehicle that holds the vehicle off the ground

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Struts (x2)- on some 4x4 models. A type of shock absorber, it is a piece of metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle.;

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Shock Absorbers (x4)- a metal tubing filled with gas-charged hydraulic fluid that is connected to the wheel of a vehicle in order to reduce the effects of vertical travel on a rough surface which controls the bounciness, and therefore comfort, of a vehicle.

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Height Sensors (x4)- a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out.

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Air Lines- tubes that run from a compressor to the air which carry pressurized air to the air bags in order to adjust the height of the vehicle, respectively.

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Compressor Assembly- creates/sends pressurized to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive.

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Dryer- prevents moisture build-up inside of air suspension parts.

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Suspension Control Module- a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height.

2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 O-rings- Although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.

Suspension Failure Signs
If the 2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 is unable to meet and maintain its proper ride height, it may have a failed or leaking air suspension system. Early detection of a bad suspension system is the key to avoiding total failure. Look for a sudden uneven ride height between different sides of the Avalanche. Usually, the rear end will sag first while the front end remains inflated. The Avalanche may lean from one side to the other. If the bad suspension has progressed further, the air compressor may have stopped working or may run too often. If suspension failure is advanced, there will be an illuminated suspension warning light on the dashboard. At this point, the Avalanche owner will need an expensive repair or direct replacement of the suspension. Any suspension issue should be fixed promptly to avoid this worst-case scenario.

OEM Replacement Cost

+ Rear Shocks ($340/shock)
+ Rear Coil Spring ($50/spring)
+ Air Compressor Assembly ($340)
= TOTAL: Over $1,100 (and that still doesnt include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).

Aftermarket Replacement Cost
'+ Rear Shocks ($230/shock) + Rear Coil Spring ($56/spring + Air Compressor Assembly ($200) = TOTAL: Over $770 (and that still doesn't include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).
Strutmasters' air to non-air suspension conversion kit gets rid of your faulty air ride headache for good. The kit, made in the USA, eliminates the air suspension's dependency on each part functioning in sync. The kit includes two cold-wound steel coil springs and two shocks for the rear of the Avalanche 1500. The kit is installed easily, in about one hour per wheel, thanks to detailed instructions and installation videos available to view online. ASE certified technicians are available to answer any and all questions about the bad suspension repair. The price is considerably lower than replacement alternatives, too. Review the following prices to help make an informed decision when the air suspension system on the Avalanche has failed: that of direct replacement at the Chevrolet dealership, that of installing aftermarket air parts on the Avalanche individually, and that of installing the Strutmasters conversion kit.
