The 2006-2012 Mercedes Benz R500 is built with the following rear suspension components:
2006-2012 Mercedes Benz R500 Electronic Shocks (x2)- shocks whose dampening capabilities are controlled by the suspension control module.
2006-2012 Mercedes Benz R500 Air Springs (x2)- commonly referred to as air bags, a plastic and rubber bag that is fitted on top of the strut that uses pressurized air as a cushion instead of a metal coil spring to hold a vehicle off of the ground and off of its wheels. These are the number one cause of all air suspension leaks. All air springs all go bad at about the same rate. If one is leaking, the others will not be far behind. For a proper repair, all of them need to be replaced at the same time.
2006-2012 Mercedes Benz R500 Height Sensors (x2)- a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out.
2006-2012 Mercedes Benz R500 Air Lines- tubes that run from a compressor to the air springs, which carry pressurized air to the air bags.
2006-2012 Mercedes Benz R500 Solenoids (x2)- usually L-shaped, these plastic components connect the electrical connection and lines of suspension components to the suspension control module on vehicles with active suspension. The solenoid regulates the air pressure for each air spring. Solenoids start to leak as they wear out causing the vehicle to sag or to lean. This will cause the ride height sensor to send a signal to activate the compressor in an attempt to inflate the air suspension and level out the vehicle. This excessive work load will eventually lead to total failure of the compressor.
2006-2012 Mercedes Benz R500 Compressor Assembly- creates/sends pressurized air to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive.
2006-2012 Mercedes Benz R500 Suspension Control Module- a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height.
2006-2012 Mercedes Benz R500 O-rings- although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.
Suspension Failure Signs
If the 2006-2012 Mercedes-Benz R500 4Wheel is unable to reach and maintain its proper ride height, it may have a failed or leaking air suspension system. Look for the following signs that indicate the suspension system is going bad, before it's too late and total failure sets in. Any height variance is a red flag. This may look like one inflated end, one sagging end, an overall squatting appearance, or a lean from one side to the other. These imbalances, if not fixed immediately, will wear out the air compressor. Listen to the air compressor. Is it working? Is it running too often? At this late stage, suspension failure is advanced and a suspension warning light will illuminate on the dash. An expensive repair or direct replacement will be necessary.
OEM Replacement Cost
- Front Struts ($496/strut) +
- Front Air Spring ($350/spring) +
- Front Mounts ($43/mount) +
- Rear Electronic Shocks ($740/shock) +
- Rear Air/Hydraulic Spring ($430/spring) +
- Air Compressor Assembly ($540)
- = TOTAL: Over $4,500 (and that doesnt even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).
Aftermarket Replacement Cost
- Front Air Struts ($675/strut) +
- Rear Electronic Shocks ($110/shock) +
- Rear Air/Hydraulic Spring ($190/spring) +
- Air Compressor Assembly ($680)
- = TOTAL: Over $2,600 (and that doesn't even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).
The air suspension system on the 06-13 Mercedes-Benz R500 is made up of various parts that must always function in unison. When one part stops working, the entire system is defunct. Strutmasters' air to non-air suspension conversion kit gets rid of this reliance for good. The kit, made in the USA, comes complete with two coil springs with mounts and two passive hydraulic fluid and gas shocks for the rear. The kit is installed in as little as one hour per wheel, thanks to detailed instructions and online installation videos. If further help is needed, ASE certified experts are available to provide technical assistance. The quality parts are more reliable than the originals; Strutmasters guarantees this with a 1-year warranty. Lastly, the kit costs a fraction of the price of dealership replacement and individual aftermarket part replacement. All-around, Strutmasters' coilover suspension conversion kit is the smartest choice.
