The 2007-2009 Mercedes Benz E550 (4MATIC Sedan) is built with the following suspension components: 2007-2009 Mercedes Benz E550 (4MATIC Sedan) Electronic Shocks (x2) - These shock absorbers are controlled electronically by the suspension control module to absorb the impact of the wheels traveling over road surfaces. 2007-2009 Mercedes Benz E550 (4MATIC Sedan) Air Springs (x4)- (models with air suspension only) These components, known commonly as "air bags" use pressurized air to cushion the impact of rough road surfaces on the vehicle. They are seated on top of the struts. They are the most likely source of air leaks within an air suspension system. These air springs wear out at about the same rate so they should be replaced simultaneously in order to properly repair the system. 2007-2009 Mercedes Benz E550 (4MATIC Sedan) Struts (x2)- These shock absorbers are metal columns filled with a hydraulic fluid. They connect the wheel of the vehicle to the frame and reduce the effect that travel over rough surfaces has on the suspension components and frame. 2007-2009 Mercedes Benz E550 (4MATIC Sedan) Height Sensors (x4)- These connectors are found near the wheel of each vehicle. They are constantly measuring the ride height of the vehicle at each wheel and sending that information back to the suspension control module. These sensors are moving parts and will eventually wear out with age. 2007-2009 Mercedes Benz E550 (4MATIC Sedan) Air Lines- These pneumatic hoses carry pressurized air from the compressor to the air springs in order to inflate the system. 2007-2009 Mercedes Benz E550 (4MATIC Sedan) Solenoids (x4)- These plastic L-shaped components connect the suspension components to the control module. Their task is to regulate the air pressure in each air spring. Once they begin to fail, the compressor will try to compensate by working overtime to try and keep everything in the system inflated. This will eventually lead to total failure of the compressor and later the system. 2007-2009 Mercedes Benz E550 (4MATIC Sedan) Compressor Assembly- The compressor is the powerhouse of the air suspension system. It generates pressurized air and pushes it out to the suspension components. It is also the most expensive and difficult component in an air suspension system to repair or replace. 2007-2009 Mercedes Benz E550 (4MATIC Sedan) Suspension Control Module- This small computer regulates the functions of the air suspension system, helping it keep a smooth ride and maintain proper ride height. 2007-2009 Mercedes Benz E550 (4MATIC Sedan) O-rings- These small rubber o-rings keep a tight seal where the air lines connect, ensuring the efficiency and integrity of the system. It is a good idea to replace them whenever the suspension system is serviced.
Suspension Failure Signs
If you suspect that your Mercedes-Benz E550 is having suspension issues, there are a few things to check to determine if repairs or replacements will be needed. You can listen out for the compressor--if it is running too loud or too long this will indicate that there is a leak or failure somewhere in the system. However the most obvious sign is a difference in height between two sides of the vehicle. Usually this means a sagging rear end and an inflated front end, but it can also show up as a difference between the passenger and driver sides of the vehicle. Once the problem becomes severe enough the suspension warning light on the dash panel will illuminate. Finding and fixing problems early is essential to avoiding total failure or enormously expensive repairs.
OEM Replacement Cost
'+ Front Air Strut Assemblies ($1,500/strut) ) + Rear Electronic Shocks ($540/shock) + Rear Air Spring ($1,000/air spring) + Air Compressor Assembly ($740) = Over $6,800 (and that doesnt even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).
Aftermarket Replacement Cost
