Replaced Components
The 2010-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel is built with the following rear suspension components:2010-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel Air Springs (x2)- commonly referred to as air bags, a plastic and rubber bag that is fitted on top of the strut that uses pressurized air as a cushion instead of a metal coil spring to hold a vehicle off of the ground and off of its wheels. These are the number one cause of all air suspension leaks. All air springs all go bad at about the same rate. If one is leaking, the others will not be far behind. For a proper repair, all of them need to be replaced at the same time.

2010-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel Height Sensors (x2)- a linkage located near each wheel of a vehicle with any electronic suspension that, either mechanically or electronically, constantly measures the height of the vehicle, and reports this information back to the control module so that the computer can identify if changes in height need to be adjusted accordingly. The ride height sensor is a moving part, and like all moving parts, they will eventually wear out.

2010-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel Air Lines- tubes that run from a compressor to the air springs, which carry pressurized air to the air bags.

2010-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel Solenoids (x2)- usually L-shaped, these plastic components connect the electrical connection and lines of suspension components to the suspension control module on vehicles with active suspension. The solenoid regulates the air pressure for each air spring. Solenoids start to leak as they wear out causing the vehicle to sag or to lean. This will cause the ride height sensor to send a signal to activate the compressor in an attempt to inflate the air suspension and level out the vehicle. This excessive work load will eventually lead to total failure of the compressor.

2010-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel Compressor Assembly- creates/sends pressurized air to active suspension components. When the air suspension starts leaking, the compressor/pump starts working harder to try to keep the system inflated. By the time air suspension leaks down completely, sitting the vehicle on its tires, the compressor will either have failed or be well on its way to full failure. Buying replacement struts and taking the time to install them only to find out the compressor still needs to be replaced can be very frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive.

2010-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel Suspension Control Module- a computer which is responsible for the operations of the air suspension system and maintaining the vehicles correct ride height.

2010-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel O-rings- although they are the least expensive parts of the air suspension, they are responsible for maintaining the seal where all of the air lines connect. Be sure to replace the O-rings when repairing any air suspension system.

Suspension Failure Signs
If the 2010-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel is unable to reach and maintain its proper ride height, a failed or leaking air suspension system may be to blame. Early identification of a bad suspension is critical to avoiding total failure. A noticeable height variance between different sides of the vehicle is a major red flag. Visually, this can result in one sagging end, one inflated end, a “squatting down” appearance, or a shifting lean from side to side. If any of these imbalances are present, the GL 350 owner should have the suspension fixed immediately. Otherwise, the air compressor will wear out. Once the air compressor has stopped working, a suspension warning light turns on. This means suspension failure is advanced. A repair or replacement at this advanced stage is costly.

OEM Replacement Cost
'+ Rear Electronic Shocks ($740/shock)
+ Rear Air/Hydraulic Spring ($430/spring)
+ Air Compressor Assembly ($540)
= TOTAL: Over $2,800 (and that doesnt even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).

Aftermarket Replacement Cost
'+ Rear Electronic Shocks ($110/shock)
+ Rear Air/Hydraulic Spring ($190/spring)
+ Air Compressor Assembly ($680)
= TOTAL: Over $1,200 (and that doesn't even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).
The various parts that comprise the air suspension system on the 2010-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel must always work in harmony. When one part stops working , the rest follow suit. This results in multiple costly repairs. Strutmasters' air to non-air suspension conversion kit gets rid of this reliance for good, so you can say goodbye to the air ride headache forever. The kit, manufactured in the USA, comes complete with two coil springs with mounts for the rear. Customers appreciate that the kit is installed easily, in as little as one hour per wheel. Detailed instructions, online installation videos, and ASE certified technicians are all available to assist the customer with his replacement project. This kit is a direct replacement solution, so no extra modifications are required before it's installed. This coilover suspension conversion is a fraction of the cost of dealership direct replacement and individual aftermarket part replacement. It's no wonder so many GL 350 BlueTEC Diesel owners make the switch.
